Buying tips
- Inspect the vehicle in daylight and if possible, choose a clear sunny day. Faded paint looks glossy and vehicles tend to run more smoothly on a rainy, humid day.
- Take your time and concentrate. Check for wear on the seats, carpet and pedals. Is the inside clean? Be thorough but discreet. Use a checklist and ask questions.
- Bring along a friend, two sets of eyes are better than one.
- Dress appropriately and bring a flashlight. Look closely at the vehicle as well as under it. Check for rust, scratches, leaks and if it has been repainted (usually indicates an accident).
- Look closely at the tires and wheel rims. Look for uneven wear.
- Take a test drive. Turn off the radio and listen for sounds. Try smooth and rough, highway and city roads.
- Ask to see a maintenance history.
- Have the vehicle inspected by your mechanic or someone you trust.
- Check to see if all doors, locks, windows and lights work.
- When looking at the engine, check oil and look for frayed tubes and belts.
