Buying tips

  1. Inspect the vehicle in daylight and if possible, choose a clear sunny day. Faded paint looks glossy and vehicles tend to run more smoothly on a rainy, humid day.

  2. Take your time and concentrate. Check for wear on the seats, carpet and pedals. Is the inside clean? Be thorough but discreet. Use a checklist and ask questions.

  3. Bring along a friend, two sets of eyes are better than one.

  4. Dress appropriately and bring a flashlight. Look closely at the vehicle as well as under it. Check for rust, scratches, leaks and if it has been repainted (usually indicates an accident).

  5. Look closely at the tires and wheel rims. Look for uneven wear.

  6. Take a test drive. Turn off the radio and listen for sounds. Try smooth and rough, highway and city roads.

  7. Ask to see a maintenance history.

  8. Have the vehicle inspected by your mechanic or someone you trust.

  9. Check to see if all doors, locks, windows and lights work.

  10. When looking at the engine, check oil and look for frayed tubes and belts.
